SMITH, Mildred
(March 28, 1916 – June 4, 2017) - Passed away at Extendicare Maple View, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Millie is preceded in death by her husband Edward and sisters-in-law Barbara Evans and Sybil Thomas. She is survived by her son Nicholas (Gayle); daughter Susan (Daniel); 3 grandchildren Andrew (Lopa) and Jennifer Smith and Stefanie Grand; and great-granddaughters Evelyn and Olivia Smith. Born in Jarrow, England, the only child of the late Beatrice and Joseph Steele. She completed her formal education by attending boarding school in Sheffield and then on to commercial college. After getting married to Edward she immigrated with her husband and son to Canada in 1954. Millie loved her family, friends and animals. Her passion and commitment to those she loved knew no bounds. She had a giving heart and enriched the lives of people who knew her. She enjoyed socializing and upheld many long-term cherished friendships. Millie enjoyed playing the piano and spent many happy hours playing while friends sang along. Millie had a passion for politics which stemmed from her belief in human rights and equality. Cremation has taken place and interment will occur in England. Memorial donations may be made to the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society, 962 Second Line East, Sault Ste. Marie ON, P6A 6J8. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for Millie at Extendicare Maple View.
